Redundancy as Philosophy

What American Institutions Are Building
Across the United States, the practical implications of this philosophical shift are becoming visible in institutional practice. The Digital Preservation Coalition, though headquartered in the United Kingdom, counts numerous American members—including the Smithsonian Institution and the New York Public Library—who have adopted its Digital Preservation Handbook as a foundational operational document. That handbook dedicates substantial attention to the risks of "format obsolescence" and "organizational fragility," both of which resonate directly with the lessons archivists draw from Jikji's history.
Several American research libraries have also begun implementing what they call "dark archive" systems—redundant, geographically distributed digital repositories that are not publicly accessible but exist solely to ensure that master copies of digitized collections survive institutional disruptions.
