In a climate-controlled reading room at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, a single volume sits behind protective barriers. It is small—about the size of a modern paperback—and its pages have darkened with seven centuries of accumulated time. This is Jikji, the oldest surviving book printed with metal movable type, produced in Korea in 1377. Scholars and conservators who have examined it describe a quiet tension in its presence: it is simultaneously one of humanity's most significant artifacts and one of its most fragile.

Many institutions lack the funding to address even a fraction of their backlog. Digitization entered this conversation as a seemingly straightforward solution. If you could capture every page of a rare book in high resolution, you could make its contents universally accessible while reducing the need to handle the physical object. Binding structures tell stories about how a book was used and repaired across generations. Marginalia—notes written by previous readers—are sometimes visible only under ultraviolet light or at raking angles that standard photography cannot replicate.

The way the bronze type impressed itself into the paper, the slight variations in ink density across a page, the evidence of how the book was bound and rebound over seven centuries—all of this constitutes evidence that scholars are still analyzing. A high-resolution scan captures an image. It does not capture an artifact.
The Funding Gap That Threatens Everything
Even setting aside the philosophical questions about what digitization can and cannot preserve, the practical realities are sobering. High-quality digitization is expensive. It requires specialized equipment, trained technicians, careful handling protocols, and—critically—ongoing investment in digital infrastructure. Digital files are not inherently permanent. They require active maintenance: format migration as software evolves, redundant storage systems, regular integrity checks to detect data corruption.
Many institutions that launched ambitious digitization programs in the early 2000s are now grappling with the costs of maintaining what they created. Hard drives fail. File formats become obsolete. Funding cycles that supported digitization projects do not always extend to the maintenance of their outputs. There is a real possibility that some of what has been digitized over the past two decades will become inaccessible within the next two.
Federal support for cultural preservation in the United States has historically been modest relative to the scale of need. The National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services provide critical grant funding, but their budgets are subject to political pressures that can—and do—result in significant cuts. Private philanthropy fills some of the gap, but it tends to favor high-profile institutions over smaller regional archives and specialized museums.

But it cannot replace the object. And as long as that is true, the physical preservation of rare printed works remains a moral and cultural imperative.
What Comes Next
Conservators and archivists working in this space are not without hope. New imaging technologies—multispectral imaging, X-ray fluorescence mapping, three-dimensional surface scanning—are expanding what can be captured from a physical artifact without touching it. Artificial intelligence tools are beginning to assist with the transcription and analysis of historical texts at scale. International partnerships are enabling institutions to share expertise and resources in ways that were not previously possible.
But technology alone will not close the preservation gap. That requires sustained public investment, institutional commitment, and a cultural consensus that the history encoded in objects like Jikji is worth the cost of protecting.
