Before Gutenberg: The Korean Masterwork That Changed Everything We Thought We Knew About Printing

Ask any American high school student who invented the printing press, and the answer will almost certainly be the same: Johannes Gutenberg. The German goldsmith's name is so thoroughly embedded in Western educational tradition that it has become shorthand for an entire epoch — the moment, we are told, when the modern world began. Yet tucked within the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris sits a slender volume that quietly, persistently, and irrefutably challenges that narrative. It is called Jikji, and it was printed in Korea in 1377 — a full 78 years before Gutenberg's famous Bible rolled off a press in Mainz.
At the Jikji Museum, our mission is not to diminish the genuine contributions of European printers or to engage in a contest of civilizational superiority. Rather, it is to ensure that the full story of human knowledge — wherever it originated — is told with honesty, rigor, and respect. Jikji is not a footnote to Western printing history. It is a chapter that was missing from the book entirely.
What Jikji Actually Is
The full title of the work is Baegun Hwasang Chorok Buljo Jikji Simche Yojeol, which translates roughly as "Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests' Zen Teachings." Compiled by the Buddhist monk Baegun Gyeonghan, it was printed at Heungdeok Temple in Cheongju, in what is now central South Korea, using metal movable type. Only the second volume of the original two-volume set has survived to the present day, and it is that single remaining volume — 78 pages of carefully arranged metal type impressions on mulberry paper — that carries the weight of an entire historical argument.
The colophon at the end of the surviving volume explicitly states the date and method of production: printed with metal type in the seventh month of 1377. This is not speculation or inference. It is a direct statement from the craftspeople who created the artifact. When UNESCO formally recognized Jikji as the world's oldest extant book printed with metal movable type in 2001, adding it to the Memory of the World Register, that recognition was grounded in decades of scholarly authentication, not cultural advocacy.
Why the West Didn't Know — And Why That Matters
The absence of Jikji from mainstream Western historical education is not simply an oversight. It reflects something more systemic about how knowledge has been organized, disseminated, and valorized across centuries. Europe's intellectual institutions — universities, encyclopedias, museums — developed largely during periods of colonial expansion, when the assumption of Western primacy in science, art, and technology was not merely a bias but an operating principle.
Korea's printing achievements, along with those of China, which developed woodblock printing centuries earlier still, were documented in texts that few European scholars could read and that fewer had any institutional incentive to seek out. The story of Gutenberg, by contrast, was deeply embedded in the cultural identity of the Renaissance and the Reformation — movements that Protestant and Catholic Europe alike claimed as their own civilizational inheritance. Printing was not just a technology; it was a symbol of European modernity. To acknowledge that this symbol had antecedents in Asia required a kind of intellectual humility that institutions rarely volunteer on their own.
This is not ancient history in a purely abstract sense. The way we teach technological innovation shapes how we understand human potential and cultural contribution. When American students learn that "printing was invented in Europe," they absorb, however unconsciously, a lesson about which civilizations are creative and which are derivative. Correcting the historical record around Jikji is therefore not merely an act of scholarly precision — it is an act of educational equity.
The Technology Behind the Achievement
It is worth pausing to appreciate what the craftspeople of 14th-century Korea actually accomplished. Metal movable type — as distinct from the woodblock printing that had existed in East Asia for centuries — requires the ability to cast individual characters in durable metal, arrange them in a frame, apply ink evenly, and produce legible impressions across many pages. The Korean alphabet, Hangul, had not yet been created in 1377; the text of Jikji was set in Chinese characters, of which there are tens of thousands. The logistical complexity of organizing, storing, and composing text from such an enormous character set was staggering.
The fact that this was accomplished not in a royal workshop with unlimited resources, but in a provincial Buddhist temple, speaks to how widely distributed technical knowledge had become in Goryeo-era Korea. Metal type casting had been developed in Korea as early as the 13th century, and by the time Jikji was produced, it represented a mature and practiced craft tradition — not an experimental novelty.
Gutenberg's Genius in Proper Context
Recognizing Jikji's precedence does not require diminishing what Gutenberg achieved. His development of a practical printing system suited to the Latin alphabet — including an oil-based ink formula, a screw press adapted from winemaking, and a type-casting method that enabled rapid production — was genuinely transformative for European society. The speed with which printed materials spread across the continent after the 1450s, fueling the Renaissance, the Reformation, and eventually the Scientific Revolution, is a matter of historical record.
But "transformative for European society" and "the origin of printing" are not the same claim. Gutenberg solved problems that were specific to his context: the needs of a Latin-script culture, the economics of a particular market, the infrastructure of a particular continent. He did so brilliantly. He did not, however, invent the concept of movable type printing. That concept had already been realized, refined, and applied in Korea — and before Korea, in China.
What Recognition Changes
When UNESCO inscribed Jikji on its Memory of the World Register, the decision was celebrated in South Korea and noted with varying degrees of attention elsewhere. In the United States, it received relatively limited coverage, and its implications for how printing history is taught remain largely unaddressed in standard curricula.
The Jikji Museum exists, in part, to close that gap. By making the story of Jikji accessible to English-speaking audiences — particularly Americans who have grown up within an educational tradition that has largely ignored this history — we aim to contribute to a more accurate and more equitable understanding of human achievement. The history of technology is not a single line running through Western Europe. It is a web of parallel and intersecting innovations, developed across cultures that were often in contact with one another through trade, diplomacy, and the movement of ideas.
Jikji is proof that the impulse to preserve and transmit knowledge through the printed word is not the property of any single civilization. It is one of the most deeply human impulses there is — and it belongs to all of us.
